Spencer & Co (estd. 1863)on Mount Road, Chennai. The Birthplace of Indian retail. The name still survives. The old spencer was damaged in a fire in 1983. It its place stands the new spencer, nowhere close to the old in terms of its majesty.But like the old one was the first store of its kind in India. The new spencer has to its credit as being India`s first true shopping mall.
